Melbourne-based artist and graphic designer Nancy
Cover creates luminous, expressive paintings inspired
by her love of flowers. Her work transforms floral forms into lively, immersive compositions, celebrating the
beauty and wonder of the natural world with a playful, spirited energy.

Trained as a graphic designer and co-owner of a
design and advertising studio, Nancy brings over 25
years of creative expertise across digital media, murals, stage sets, landscapes, and portraiture. This rich and
varied background informs her distinctive approach, seamlessly blending commercial precision with unrestrained artistic freedom.

Nancy delves into the emotional and symbolic language
of flowers, exploring their stories through layered acrylics and bold impasto techniques. Each painting builds
depth and dimension, with thick, sculpted paint that captures light, shadow, and vivid colour in a way that
draws viewers into the experience. Her confident
brushwork and energetic compositions evoke nature’s vitality, fragility, and resilience, turning every piece into

Q: When did your love for floral art begin, and what drew
you to flowers as a subject?
A: Like many artists, I went through that phase of asking
myself, “What do I paint?” I started with portraits,
animals, and pastels. But I wanted to push myself beyond my very structured graphic design background and be more expressive. I’ve always loved flowers, especially because they allow me to experiment with colour. Flowers are also something people connect with emotionally, so
I decided to explore them, and that’s what led me to
where I am now.

Q: How has graphic design influenced your art?
A: It’s influenced my art in many ways. Being a graphic
designer exposed me to colour, layout, composition, and
storytelling through visuals. Working closely with people and conveying emotion through design has shaped how I approach painting. Creativity has always been central to my life, and that experience has definitely carried through into my art practice.

Q. What role did creativity play in your childhood and
teenage years?
A. Creativity was always there. I vividly remember being
in kindergarten and feeling so excited when the teacher brought out the butcher’s paper and paints. That smell
of paint and brushes was the best part of the day for me.

I was also influenced by my uncle, who is a self-taught
artist, and my brother, who was very creative. Seeing
them made me want to improve and practise more. I kept drawing and painting throughout my life, even while working as a graphic designer.

Later on, when my children were at primary school, I was asked to paint a mural at their school, which led to more mural work. I also drew portraits and painted pets, particularly dogs. I feel very fortunate to have been able
to work across many different creative fields.
