MARTIN BREEZE

April 28, 2022 by Artist Lane

“My art is all abstract. I am fascinated by it because it affords me the opportunity to avoid trying
to imitate the world around me or to focus on replicating any fixed objects,” Martin said. “Life has
so many boundaries, and restrictions and abstract art allows me to let go and see where
[the flow] takes me I am in love with not knowing what will become of the blank canvas!”

Q.  What does a day in the life look like for you?
A.  I paint everyday, regardless of mood.

Q. How would you describe your artistic style?
How has it evolved over time?

A. My work is all abstract. I have no interest in replicating the world around me. I have no preconceived ideas about what I set out to do. I just let go. Detached from judgement.

For me, it’s about flow. Being lost in the moment at the very same time as doing something that challenges me.

My work has evolved and will continue to do so because I’m less fearful of making mistakes. These days, I define my success only by the magnitude of my endless failures. How good is that?!

Q. Where do you draw your inspiration from?
A. I don’t get inspired to do the work. I do the work to get inspired.

Q. How do you fit your art around life?
A. Easy. It IS my life! I made the decision to undertake the work that has meaning to me and one that I’m also passionate about.

Q.  Do you have a playlist or podcast…..?
A.  I listen to an ever expanding playlist that I’ve titled “ethereal”. No vocals, no words. Just simplicity, beauty, tension, questioning, angst, curiosity.

Q. Which artist inspires you and why?
A. It may seem strange but I avoid other artists work. I focus on tapping into me and what I see. What I want want to see, so I avoid being influenced at all costs.

Q. How do you come up with a name for your artworks?
A. Purely stream of consciousness. I sit and look at the artwork, and play. Words, names, whatever comes into my head.  It’s like when I look at my paintings and knowing when to stop.  It’s the same with names.  I know when it’s right. Right for me.

Q. What can we expect for your art collection this year?
A.
I have absolutely no idea…and that’s just the way I like it!

Q. How do you engage with other artists?
A.
I’ve made some great contacts with other artists. Mainly, bouncing ideas around about the logistical side. Admin, websites, social media, packaging, branding, deliveries. It’s a wonderful network, especially when you come across other artists who don’t hold their cards so close to their chest
.

Q. What does it mean to be an artist to you?
A.
It gives me purpose, otherwise I’d be struggling to find meaning in a meaningless world. When I finish a painting, I can stand back and honestly say “This is me”.

My work allows me to search for the space where fear and curiosity collide and so, in order to create my best work, I attempt to create a version of my higher self.
It’s such a gift.
